Sleep Apnea Airway Evaluation

Do I Have an Airway Issue? Understanding the Link to Sleep Apnea

At Precise Orthodontics, we recognize that airway health plays a critical role in overall wellness—and it often starts with identifying signs of sleep apnea early. That’s why every patient receives a thorough airway evaluation at their initial orthodontic consultation.

What to Expect During Your Airway Evaluation

Dr. Patiño carefully examines your oropharynx (the part of the throat behind the mouth) and evaluates the size and position of the palatine tonsils, which can obstruct airflow if enlarged. He also reviews your medical and sleep history, asking specific questions about common symptoms including:

  • Chronic snoring
  • Daytime fatigue or difficulty concentrating
  • Waking up gasping or choking
  • Frequent nighttime awakenings
  • Dry mouth or sore throat upon waking

Advanced Imaging with 3D CBCT

To further investigate airway health, we utilize 3D CBCT imaging (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) to provide a detailed view of the upper airway. This technology allows Dr. Patiño to visualize potential narrowings or structural concerns that may contribute to sleep apnea or other breathing disorders.

When ENT Collaboration Is Needed

If any significant anatomical concerns or sleep apnea symptoms are identified, Dr. Patiño will refer you to a trusted ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) specialist for a full airway and sleep evaluation. Our goal is to ensure you receive the comprehensive care needed—whether it involves orthodontic treatment, medical intervention, or a combination of both.

🦷 Orthodontics and Sleep Apnea

Orthodontic conditions such as narrow arches, improper jaw development, or tongue posture can contribute to sleep-disordered breathing and even mild to moderate sleep apnea. In select cases, orthodontic treatment—including palatal expansion or jaw alignment—can help improve airway volume and breathing efficiency.

Don’t Ignore the Signs of Sleep Apnea

If you or your child experiences symptoms of sleep apnea, it’s important to have your airway evaluated. At Precise Orthodontics, we don’t just focus on straightening teeth—we’re committed to your overall health and wellness.
